Authentic Indian Poha Recipe: A Quick and Healthy Breakfast Delight
Introduction
Yay! It’s time to introduce you to our food blog! On this episode, we start with the basics of Indian cuisine for a breakfast item most can appreciate— Poha. although it is a flat rice which has been disc shaped and therefore is relatively easy to prepare, the dish is actually very healthy to consume. Even if you are a beginner in cooking Indian recipes and don’t know where to start, Poha could be a good stop for you, especially when you feel hungry in the morning, Poha can also be a great option for breakfast. Let's get started!
Bataka Pohe" is a traditional Maharashtrian breakfast dish made from flattened rice (poha) and potatoes (bataka). Here's a simple recipe for making Bataka Pohe:
You can also make this recipe without garlic and onion. By eating garlic and onion we become Tamasi! They cause us a lot of harm! That is why we should not eat them! It's expert experience.
Ingredients
1 cup of Poha (flattened rice)
1 medium onion, finely chopped
1 medium potato, finely chopped
1 green chili, finely chopped
1/4 cup of peanuts
1/2 teaspoon of mustard seeds
1/2 teaspoon of cumin seeds
8-10 curry leaves
1/4 teaspoon of turmeric powder
Salt to taste
1 tablespoon of oil
1 tablespoon of lemon juice
Fresh coriander leaves, chopped (for garnish)
Sev or bhujia (optional, for garnish)
Method
Preparation:
Wash the Poha in a large sieve or colander under running water until it is tender but still retains its structure.
Drain it and let it rest on the colander for some time in case there is water which needs to drain.
Now add a pinch of salt and the turmeric powder on to the Poha once rinsed and then lightly toss it about. Set aside.
Cooking the Potatoes:
Pour some oil into a pan in the preheated indications for medium heat. Put the Mustard seeds and when they start spluttering add it.
Turn the heat down and add the cumin seeds and curry leaves. Sauté for a few seconds as stated by Margaret, Kitchen Speed, and The Taste of Home.. Add the chopped potatoes and a pinch of salt.
I would personally add the following step:
Take out the pieces of potatoes after they have fried and set them aside to cool. Add on a lid, and allow the potatoes to cook through.
Cooking the Onions and Peanuts:
Stir in the chopped onions and green chilies to the pan prepared above. Sauté for a couple of minutes or until the onions become softened or slightly sticky and translucent. Include the peanuts and stir, cooking for some 2-3 minutes until a slightly cooked peanut finish is achieved.
Combining with Poha:
Put the prepared poha on the pan and toss it with the already prepared onion and potatoes mixture. Prepare for another 2-3 minutes, while stirring the mixture gently so that the Poha gets cooked adequately.
Finishing Touches:
That’s it Now garnish the Poha with lemon juice and switch the heat off. Mix gently. Serve with chopped coriander leaves and a pinch of sev or bhujia on the top to give a lovely crunch.
Tips & variation
Vegetable Add-ins:
You can also include other vegetables such as green peas, carrots, or bell peppers into your Poha to supplement its nutrition content.
Spice Level:
You can vary how much green chilies you wish to add depending on how hot you would want your dishes to be.
Serving:
Poha on its own is better intended to be eaten hot with a cup of Yogurt or a cup of Chai.
